The 5-Step Test – How to Know if a Child Can Ride Safely Without a Booster

Posted in: Booster Seats

Are you curious if your child is ready to ride safely without a booster?

The 5-Step Test is a simple way to see if the vehicle’s seat belt fits the child properly.

Kids who can answer “yes” to all 5 questions can ride safely without a booster. Most kids are close to 5 feet tall before you’ll be able to say yes to all 5.

For kids riding in a booster, steps 3, 4 and 5 are helpful for determining whether the booster you are using is doing its job of positioning the seat belt in the proper parts of the child’s body. If you answer “no” to 3, 4, or 5 with the child in the booster, we’d suggest trying a different booster.

If you answer  “no” to any of these questions, your child STILL needs a booster seat to make both the shoulder belt and the lap belt fit right and to keep them safest.
